MotoGP champion Martin out indefinitely after hand surgery

World MotoGP champion Jorge Martin has been ruled out for an indefinite period of time after undergoing surgery for fractures to his left hand suffered in a fall, his Aprilia team announced on Tuesday.

Spaniard Martin had already been sidelined for this weekend's opening race of the season in Thailand after injuring his hand and foot during a training session on Monday in Spain.

The 27-year-old was still recovering from separate fractures to his right hand and left foot sustained in a horror crash during pre-season testing in Malaysia earlier this month.

"Jorge Martin's surgery was successfully completed," Aprilia said in a statement Tuesday.

"The recovery time will be assessed in the coming days."

He joined the Aprilia factory team on a two-year deal after winning the 2024 championship for Pramac Ducati.

Italian Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin at the Buriram circuit in Thailand, with the second race of the season on March 16 in Argentina.
